The Monroe Community Ambulance Board of Trustees and the Monroe County Emergency Medical Authority have announced an automated external defibrillator (AED) grant program for Monroe County organizations. AEDs will be donated to five organizations who best meet the criteria. Higher priority will be given to organizations with activities or populations more susceptible to heart problems and sudden cardiac arrest. Those eligible to apply include nonprofits, churches, schools and government entities. MCA will also offer an AED training program at no cost to each grant recipient. The deadline to apply is Friday, April 29, 2011. For more information or to receive a grant application, email nraupp@hva.org or call (734) 477-6782. A grant application can also be downloaded from this page.

AEDs are medical devices that provide an electric shock to a heart that has stopped. They are the first line of defense when someone suffers sudden cardiac arrest. “When a person’s heart stops beating during a heart attack, defibrillation needs to happen quickly for survival,” states MCA Vice President Dirk Borton.  “These defibrillators will be placed in locations where sudden cardiac arrest is more likely to occur.” The portable devices are easy to use and have been proven to save lives. Early access to CPR and AED use within the first 3 to 5 minutes of a cardiac arrest may increase the survival rate by as much as 50%, according to the American Heart Association.

MCA’s push for AEDs in public places is part of our effort to create a “Heart-Safe” community. MCA is also a member of the Bedford Heart Heroes, a group of community organizations raising funds to place AEDs in Bedford elementary schools and White Park. The group recently awarded three AEDs to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department for use in their patrol cars in Bedford Township. In 2009, MCA donated four public access AEDs throughout the county through a similar process. MCA has state of the art 12-lead ECG equipment in all of our vehicles, allowing paramedics to diagnose heart attacks in the field, thereby giving hospitals extra time to activate their cardiac care teams.

Monroe Community Ambulance is a nonprofit, nationally accredited ambulance service that provides emergency medical services to all of Monroe County.  MCA is a partnership of Mercy Memorial Hospital System, ProMedica Transportation Network, LifeStar Ambulance and Huron Valley Ambulance (HVA).
