AEDs are specifically designed for the first person at the scene of a sudden cardiac arrest. They are easy to understand and use in a cardiac emergency, when every second counts. It’s just plain simple.

Five area organizations will have added peace of mind knowing they have an automated external defibrillator (AED) on site.

The AEDs are being awarded as part of a grant program by the Monroe Community Ambulance (MCA) Board of Trustees and the Monroe County Emergency Medical Authority (EMA). Area nonprofits, churches, schools and government entities were encouraged to apply for an AED grant in April. The applications were reviewed, and priority was given to organizations that host large numbers of the public, provide sports venues or serve populations more susceptible to heart problems and sudden cardiac arrest.

The 2011 AED grant recipients include: Fairview County Home in Monroe; North Elementary School in Newport; St. Mary Parish in Monroe; Summerfield Petersburg Branch Library in Petersburg; and Douglas Road School in Lambertville (through the Bedford Heart Heroes). The AEDs will be presented on Wednesday, August 17 at 6 p.m. during the regular meeting of the Monroe County EMA at 106 E. First St, Monroe.

AEDs are medical devices that provide an electric shock to a heart that has stopped. They are the first line of defense when someone suffers sudden cardiac arrest. “When a person’s heart stops beating, defibrillation needs to happen quickly for survival,” states MCA Vice President Dirk Borton. “The portable AEDs are easy to use and have been proven to save lives.”

Sudden Cardiac Arrest can strike anyone, anytime, anywhere. The American Heart Association indicates that early access to CPR and AED use within the first 3 to 5 minutes of a cardiac arrest may increase the survival rate by as much as fifty percent.

MCA’s push to have AEDs available in public places is part of its effort to create a “Heart-Safe” community. MCA is also a member of the Bedford Heart Heroes, a group of community organizations raising funds to place AEDs throughout Bedford Township.

Monroe Community Ambulance is a nonprofit, nationally accredited ambulance service that provides emergency medical services to all of Monroe County.  MCA is a partnership of Mercy Memorial Hospital System, ProMedica Transportation Network, LifeStar Ambulance and Huron Valley Ambulance (HVA).
