| Bedford Heart Heroes to hold free CPR/AED marathon on April 2 | ||||
|
|
On Saturday, April 2 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, the
Bedford Heart Heroes will hold a free CPR/AED marathon where the
public can learn lifesaving skills at no charge. Certified
instructors will teach cardiopulmonary resuscitation, automated
external defibrillation and how to save choking victims. Methods
taught will include those for adults, children and infants. At the
marathon, to be held at the Lambertville United Methodist Church at
8165 Douglas Road in Lambertville, individuals can decide if they
want to learn rescue breathing with CPR or not. Everyone will have a
chance to learn the AED.
Scouts, sports teams and youth groups are
encouraged to attend. If you plan to bring a larger group, or for
more information on the marathon, contact Bonnie Boggs, RRT, Program
Director, Respiratory Therapy Program,
A four-hour paid adult CPR/AED course will also be
offered that day for those who need CPR certification. For
information on the paid course, contact Tracy Boudrie at
734-289-1481 or go online at
www.arc-monroe.org and click “Take a class”.
The “Bedford Heart Heroes” are a group of community
organizations committed to raising $20,000 to purchase, place and
maintain 10 automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in Bedford
Township and train residents how to use them. They have raised over
a third of their goal but continue to need donations. On March 13,
they presented the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department with three
AEDs to be used in the patrol cars that cover Bedford Township.
The Bedford Heart Heroes’ goal is to place the
additional AEDs in all Bedford elementary schools, and at White
Park. Another Bedford Heart Hero goal is to have all coaches
certified in CPR and AED use. So far, 37 coaches and athletic
personnel from the Bedford area have been trained in CPR and AED
use.
Give yourself and your neighbors the power to save
lives with AEDs. Send a tax-deductible donation to the Bedford
Community Foundation (write “AED” on your check), P.O. Box 54,
Lambertville, Michigan 48144. For more information on the group,
contact Roxann Satkowski,
District
Nurse at Bedford Public Schools, at 734-850-6288, or email her at
roxann.satkowski@bedford.k12.mi.us.

November 5.
One of the Bedford Heart Hero goals is to have all
coaches certified in CPR and AED use. So far, 37 coaches and

and AED use.
In July 2010, when a Bedford High School football
player collapsed at practice, coaches immediately started CPR and a
Monroe County sheriff’s deputy quickly arrived at the scene with an
AED in his squad car. The sheriff’s deputy successfully
defibrillated the athlete and he survived. This event sparked the
formation of the Bedford Heart Heroes.
Today this student walks the halls of Bedford High
School with his classmates because of this rapid response to his
Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) with early CPR, early access to an AED
and early advanced medical care. The Bedford Heart Heroes include
the following organizations: 3B Baseball, the American Red Cross,
Bedford Athletic Boosters, Bedford Community Foundation, Bedford
Lions Club, Bedford Public Schools, the Bedford Township Fire
Department, Bedford Township Supervisor’s Office, Mercy Memorial
Hospital System, Monroe Community Ambulance, Monroe County Community
College and ProMedica Transportation Network.
Early access to CPR and AED use within the first 3
to 5 minutes of a SCA may increase the survival rate by as much as
50%, according to the American Heart Association.
Future AED and CPR training programs will be
scheduled. Call 2-1-1 for more information.
