At approximately 6:10 a.m.on January 26, 2008, Jackson Community Ambulance Emergency Medical Technician Cheryl Kiefer was struck by a vehicle and fatally injured.  She and another medic were on an ambulance returning to Jackson County when they observed an accident on eastbound I-94 at Kalmbach Road in Sylvan Township, Washtenaw County.  They turned around and were assisting the accident victim when another car lost control and struck Kiefer.  She was critically injured and trapped in the wreckage until extricated by the Chelsea Area Fire Authority.  JCA and Huron Valley Ambulance paramedics transported her to the Trauma Center at the University of Michigan Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at approximately 8:45 a.m.  No one else was transported from either accident scene.

Ms. Kiefer was 23 years old and a resident of Brooklyn.  She is survived by her parents and one sister.  She had been working for JCA for just over a year and is a former firefighter with the Columbia Township Fire Department in Brooklyn.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Cheryl and her family at this tragic time.

Jackson Community Ambulance is a partnership between Huron Valley Ambulance in Ann Arbor and Foote Health System in Jackson.  JCA has provided ambulance service in Jackson County since 1996.
